What is Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Understanding Wisdom teeth is something everyone should know. They are the last molars to appear, often surfacing in the late teens or early twenties. While some erupt without issues, others can become impacted, partially emerge, or grow at awkward angles, leading to pain, swelling, infection, or crowding.

Wisdom tooth surgery may be required when the tooth is partially erupted, leaving it susceptible to decay, or when there is a recurring gum infection. Additionally, you may need surgery if X-rays show cyst formation, there is damage to adjacent teeth, or the tooth’s position prevents effective cleaning.

Types of Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Simple Extractions for Fully Erupted Wisdom Teeth

When a wisdom tooth has fully erupted through the gum and is in a favourable position, removal can often be performed through a simple tooth extraction, which is quick and causes minimal discomfort.

Surgical Extractions for Impacted or Partially Erupted Teeth

If a wisdom tooth is trapped beneath the gum or only partly visible, surgical removal may be necessary. Surgical extraction involves making a small incision in the gum and, in some cases, removing a small amount of bone to access the tooth.

Multiple wisdom tooth removal in one session.

For patients who require more than one wisdom tooth extraction, our clinic can complete all removals in a single appointment. This approach minimises the number of visits, anaesthetic applications, and recovery periods.

Sedation-assisted surgery for anxious patients or complex cases.

We understand that oral surgery can be daunting. For nervous patients or for procedures involving deeply impacted teeth, we offer sedation options alongside local anaesthesia.

Sedation creates a calm, dream-like state, allowing your Oral Surgeon to complete the procedure to with minimal awareness or anxiety. All sedation is carried out under careful monitoring, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the process.

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for wisdom tooth surgery?

You can book directly with Bondi Family Dentist. We also welcome referrals from other dental clinics. If you’ve been assessed elsewhere and advised to have your wisdom teeth removed, we can work closely with your dentist to ensure a smooth handover of care.

How long will recovery from Wisdom Tooth Surgery take?

Most people feel back to normal within 3–5 days. You can expect swelling and mild discomfort in the first 48 hours, and you can manage it with pain relief and cold compresses. If your oral surgeon uses stitches, they usually dissolve within one to two weeks, depending on the stitch type.

How long does wisdom tooth surgery take?

A straightforward extraction of a fully erupted tooth may take only 20–40 minutes. Impacted or partially erupted teeth that require surgical access can take 45–60 minutes to treat. Removing all four teeth in a single session can take up to 90 minutes, depending on complexity.

Do I need local anaesthesia or sedation?

Bondi Family Dentist performs all wisdom tooth surgeries under local anaesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. For anxious patients, complex extractions, or multiple teeth, Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas), medications or IV sedation can be arranged for added comfort.

Can you remove all four wisdom teeth at once?

Yes. Many patients prefer to have all four teeth removed in one visit to avoid multiple recovery periods. Your dentist or Oral Surgeon may recommend this option for some orthodontic or surgical treatment plans, and it’s often combined with sedation for comfort.

Will you update my dentist if I’m referred for Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

Absolutely. If another dentist has referred you, we provide a full post-operative report, including X-rays and treatment notes, so your regular dentist is informed of your procedure and recovery.
